Enchanted Cornwall by Daphne du Maurier

Enchanted Cornwall by Daphne du Maurier is a beautifully illustrated pictorial memoir that offers readers an intimate glimpse into the celebrated author’s lifelong relationship with Cornwall — the rugged and atmospheric English county that inspired much of her literary output. Best known for classics such as Rebecca, Jamaica Inn, and Frenchman’s Creek, du Maurier captures the mystery, romance, isolation, and haunting beauty of Cornwall with warmth and deep personal affection.

This edition of Enchanted Cornwall, published by Mermaid Books in 1992, combines reflective autobiographical writing with striking colour and black-and-white photography drawn from the family collection and complemented by atmospheric landscape photography. The result is both a literary memoir and a visual journey through one of Britain’s most iconic coastal regions. Readers familiar with du Maurier’s fiction will immediately recognise the dramatic settings and emotional landscapes that shaped her storytelling.

Enchanted Cornwall explores Cornwall’s villages, coastline, rivers, harbours, and moorlands while also revealing how profoundly the region influenced the author’s imagination and identity. More than a travel book, Enchanted Cornwall serves as a personal meditation on place, memory, creativity, and belonging. It remains highly collectible among admirers of Daphne du Maurier, British literary history, Cornish culture, and illustrated travel books.

An attractive addition to any collection of literary memoirs, British travel writing, or twentieth-century English literature.
