English–Zulu Dictionary by C. M. Doke, D. McK. Malcolm and J. M. Sikakana is one of the landmark reference works in the study and preservation of the isiZulu language. Published by Witwatersrand University Press in 1958, this substantial dictionary was compiled by some of the most respected scholars and linguists working in African language studies during the twentieth century.
Designed as a practical and authoritative resource, the dictionary provides English-to-Zulu translations and remains an important tool for students, researchers, educators, linguists, translators and collectors of South African language material. English–Zulu Dictionary reflects a period of intensive scholarly effort to document and standardise indigenous African languages and continues to be cited in linguistic and historical studies.
Clement Martyn Doke is particularly renowned for his pioneering contributions to Bantu linguistics, making this volume an important piece of South African academic publishing history. Beyond its practical value as a language reference, English–Zulu Dictionary offers insight into the development of isiZulu studies during the mid-twentieth century and the broader history of African language scholarship.
Copies of early Witwatersrand University Press language reference works are increasingly difficult to locate, particularly in complete and serviceable condition. The English–Zulu Dictionary would appeal to collectors of Africana, linguistic studies, South African educational history, Zulu culture and language, and university press publications.
