Exhibition Road – Painters at the Royal College of Art

Exhibition Road: Painters at the Royal College of Art by Andrew Brighton and Paul Huxley is a richly illustrated and scholarly survey of generations of painters trained at the prestigious Royal College of Art (RCA), documenting their works, evolution of styles, and the institution’s impact on British and international art. The volume draws on archival material, student records, and contributions from former and current faculty to trace how the RCA — located on London’s famous Exhibition Road — nurtured artists who went on to shape modern and contemporary painting. The breadth of artists covered spans decades, making the book both a historical record and an homage to art education’s role in shaping visual culture.

Inside Exhibition Road, readers will find high-quality reproductions of works by RCA alumni, ranging from early 20th-century pieces to contemporary paintings, accompanied by biographical notes, contextual essays, and critical commentary. Brighton and Huxley explore how teaching philosophies, historical events, and evolving artistic trends influenced the output of each generation. They also reflect on the broader significance of art institutions, mentorship, and community in fostering artistic growth — making the book enlightening for art historians, students, and collectors alike.

This edition is ideal for art libraries, collectors of British art history, and anyone interested in the lineage of painting practices stemming from a major art school. Exhibition Road: Painters at the Royal College of Art offers not just a gallery of images, but a thoughtful narrative of institutional influence, creative continuity and the evolution of artistic vision — a compelling resource for anyone invested in the development of modern art.
