Published in Brussels in 1953, this important scientific monograph forms Fascicule 6 of the landmark research series “Exploration du Parc National de l’Upemba – Mission G.F. de Witte.” The work documents reptile species recorded during the Belgian scientific expeditions to Upemba National Park in the Belgian Congo (1946–1949).
Authored by Gaston-François de Witte, a renowned Belgian herpetologist, the volume provides detailed taxonomic descriptions, specimen records, and distribution data for reptiles collected during the expedition. Early scientific surveys such as Exploration du Parc National remain important references for researchers studying Central African biodiversity.
Exploration du Parc National is richly illustrated with 41 plates, including several colour photographic plates, alongside scientific line illustrations and field documentation. A fold-out map of the research area further enhances the work, illustrating the geographic scope of the expedition.
Part of the highly respected Institut des Parcs Nationaux du Congo Belge publication series, these fascicles were printed in relatively small numbers and are increasingly sought after by collectors of African natural history, colonial scientific exploration, herpetology, and mid-20th century zoological research.
This example remains a well-preserved original 1953 paperback edition of 322 pages, including the index, with the plates and map present.
An excellent addition for collectors of African exploration literature, natural history monographs, and scientific expedition publications.
Condition – Very Good
Original 1953 printed wrappers. The binding remains intact and sound. This is a very clean copy internally, with the pages, plates and fold-out map well preserved. The paper covers show creasing and light wear along the edges, typical of fragile scientific paper wrappers from this period. Aside from the creased cover edges, the volume presents exceptionally well for a mid-20th century expedition publication.
