The Family and Local History Handbook 10 is the tenth edition of the long-running reference guide edited and compiled by Robert Blatchford, with Elizabeth Blatchford as assistant editor. It was published in 2006 by Robert Blatchford Publishing in association with Family History Monthly, Family Tree Magazine, Practical Family History and the National Family History Fair. Each edition of the handbook was updated with new articles and refreshed directory listings, so the series is collected by researchers as well as used on the desk.
The Family and Local History Handbook 10 combines practical articles on tracing ancestors and researching local history with extensive directories of record offices, archives, libraries, museums and family history societies. It is illustrated throughout with photographs and carries advertising from genealogy services of the day, itself a small snapshot of the family history world in the mid-2000s, just as online census and parish records were opening up research to everyone.
Its focus is chiefly on the British Isles, making it a useful starting point for anyone tracing English, Scottish, Welsh or Irish roots. Many South African families have ancestors who arrived from Britain, whether with the 1820 Settlers, as Natal immigrants or as soldiers who stayed on, and The Family and Local History Handbook 10 is a handy desk reference for following those lines back across the water to the parish, county and record office where the story began.
A good buy for genealogists, family history society members, local historians and anyone beginning their family tree research, as well as for reference libraries and collectors of the handbook series.
