Farewell Austria by Kurt von Schuschnigg was published in London in 1938 by Cassell & Company, following Austria’s political crisis and the looming Anschluss with Nazi Germany. Schuschnigg, who served as Chancellor of Austria from 1934 until March 1938, offers his personal reflections and policy perspective on Austrian sovereignty, nationalism and the destabilising forces of German expansion.
In this volume, Schuschnigg recounts his government’s efforts to maintain Austrian independence, the diplomatic pressures from Berlin, and his ultimate resignation under duress. The book articulates the challenges Austria faced between 1934-1938: balancing internal authoritarian rule, external threats, national identity and the fatal politics of appeasement. It contains plates and portraits, and presents the author’s viewpoint of Austria’s fate at the crossroads of Europe’s power struggles.
