“Farmer’s Cyclopedia of Live Stock” is a comprehensive reference work for livestock, embracing cattle, horses, dairy breeds, swine, sheep, poultry and related farming practices. Authored by Earley V. Wilcox and Clarence B. Smith and published in 1908, the book runs to some 745 pages and includes colour plates, anatomical illustrations and extensive coverage of breeds, feeding, breeding, diseases, housing, product markets and by-products.
In this Cyclopedia the authors organise material by animal class and provide detailed treatment of features such as breed characteristics, selection criteria, feeding standards (including fodder, grains, and by-products), disease control (anthrax, glanders, tetanus, etc.), slaughtering and product preparation, and business aspects of stock farming. The attention to detail is remarkable—treating everything from dairy cattle farming to mules, from meat curing to hide processing and tallow rendering.
