Final Project Report – Looking Back On The Sabonet Project

Final Project Report – Looking Back on the SABONET Project by Yolande Steenkamp, published in 2005 by the Southern African Biodiversity Institute, is an essential retrospective on one of the most influential regional biodiversity initiatives undertaken in southern Africa. Focused on the Southern African Botanical Diversity Network (SABONET), the report provides a thorough and candid assessment of the project’s achievements, challenges, and long-term impacts across the ten participating countries.

Steenkamp documents how SABONET strengthened botanical capacity, expanded herbarium infrastructure, improved data management systems, and fostered cross-border collaboration, offering readers a clear view of how the initiative transformed plant conservation work throughout the subcontinent.

Final Project Report serves both as a historical record and a strategic resource. It outlines the methodologies used to train botanists, develop Red Data Lists, digitize specimen collections, and promote regional coordination in plant taxonomy. The report’s narrative is supported by detailed analyses, project evaluations, and forward-looking recommendations, making it particularly valuable to researchers, conservation planners, and institutional leaders involved in biodiversity assessment or environmental policy development.

As a publication of the Southern African Biodiversity Institute, the work reflects professional production standards and authoritative insight, encapsulating a pivotal period in southern African conservation history. For collectors of environmental literature, practitioners in biodiversity management, or institutions seeking reference material on capacity-building initiatives, Final Project Report – Looking Back on the SABONET Project remains a significant, informative, and highly relevant publication.
