Five Years in Turkey by Liman von Sanders

Five Years in Turkey by General Liman von Sanders is one of the most important first-hand accounts to emerge from the Ottoman front during the First World War. Written by the German officer appointed to reorganise and command Ottoman military forces, this fascinating memoir provides a rare insider’s perspective on the military, political, and strategic realities of the collapsing Ottoman Empire during one of the most turbulent periods in modern history.

Best remembered for his involvement in the defence of Gallipoli against Allied invasion forces, Liman von Sanders offers detailed observations on military leadership, battlefield conditions, diplomatic tensions, and the complex relationship between Germany and the Ottoman Empire. Five Years in Turkey covers not only the Gallipoli Campaign, but also broader wartime operations across Turkey and the Middle East, making this an essential reference work for historians, collectors, and enthusiasts of First World War military history.

This Naval & Military Press edition, produced in association with the Royal Artillery Museum’s Firepower collection, is a high-quality facsimile reprint of the original work. Five Years in Turkey contains numerous text illustrations and six pages of maps, greatly enhancing its research and reference value. The book remains highly regarded for its strategic commentary and contemporary eyewitness insight into one of the defining campaigns of the twentieth century.

An excellent addition to any military history collection, especially for collectors focusing on Gallipoli, Ottoman history, German military memoirs, or rare First World War source material.
