Grootbos Nature Reserve lies in the Western Cape within the extraordinary Cape Floristic Region, an area internationally renowned for its exceptional botanical diversity. The reserve encompasses fynbos as well as pockets of Afrotemperate forest and ancient milkwood woodland, providing a remarkably varied environment for indigenous plants.
Flora of Grootbos Nature Reserve presents 410 species from the 765 plant species recorded at Grootbos at the time of publication. Particular attention is given to showy flowering plants, species of conservation concern and plants that readers are likely to encounter throughout the wider Walker Bay region. Each species is described and illustrated, making the guide useful both for identification in the field and for readers interested in the remarkable botanical character of the southern Cape.
Flora of Grootbos Nature Reserve was the result of years of work by Grootbos staff and collaborators. Heiner Lutzeyer, a passionate botanist and resident of Grootbos, worked with Sean Privett on documenting the reserve’s flora. Their research ultimately recorded an extraordinary 765 species, including several species new to science and numerous plants of conservation significance.
