From Fury to Phantom: An RAF Pilot’s Story, 1936–1970 by Group Captain Richard “Dickie” Haine is a gripping firsthand account of a career that spanned one of the most transformative periods in aviation history. From the wooden wings of pre-war biplanes to the supersonic age of Cold War jets, Haine’s journey reflects the evolution of the Royal Air Force over nearly four decades.
The memoir begins in the mid-1930s, when Haine trained on the de Havilland Gipsy Moth before flying frontline aircraft such as the Hawker Demon and Gloster Gladiator. During World War II, he served in various combat roles, including as a night-fighter pilot flying Bristol Blenheims and later the Mosquito. His wartime experiences include surviving a shoot-down over occupied Europe, engaging enemy bombers in night operations, and helping reestablish airfields in the Far East after Japan’s surrender.
Post-war, Haine’s career advanced as he transitioned to jet aircraft and played a role in the RAF’s adoption of nuclear-capable bombers and cutting-edge fighter jets. He ended his service in 1970 with the rank of Group Captain, having commanded squadrons and shaped training programs for the next generation of aviators.
