The 5 Reichsmark coin featuring Paul von Hindenburg was issued during the period of the Weimar Republic and continued into the early years of the Nazi Germany. Hindenburg, a respected military leader from World War I, served as President of Germany from 1925 until his death in 1934.
The obverse displays a dignified left-facing portrait of Hindenburg in military uniform, with the inscription “PAUL VON HINDENBURG”. The portrait reflects his status as a national figure of authority and stability during a turbulent period in German history.
The reverse features the German national eagle, holding a wreath, with the denomination “5 REICHSMARK” and the date below. Earlier issues (pre-1933) display the Weimar-style eagle, while later issues (1934 onwards) show the more stylised eagle associated with the Nazi regime. This makes the type especially interesting to collectors due to its transitional historical context.
These coins were struck in silver and served as high-denomination currency in Germany during the interwar years. Today, they are widely collected for their historical significance, silver content, and association with one of Germany’s most important political figures.
