Golden Shadows, Flying Hooves by renowned wildlife biologist and conservationist George B. Schaller is a classic work of wildlife observation that combines scientific field research with highly readable natural-history writing. This copy is the First British Edition, published by Collins in 1974, following the original American publication by Alfred A. Knopf in 1973.
Schaller draws on extensive fieldwork in East Africa to examine the lives of some of the continent’s most iconic mammals, particularly the lion and its prey species. Rather than presenting African wildlife simply as a collection of individual animals, Golden Shadows, Flying Hooves explores the relationships between predators, herbivores, habitat and behaviour within the wider ecosystem. Schaller’s detailed observations provide insight into hunting, feeding, movement, social behaviour, survival strategies and the ecological interactions between African predators and ungulates.
George B. Schaller is regarded as one of the major field biologists and wildlife conservationists of the modern era. His ability to combine rigorous scientific observation with accessible narrative makes his books particularly appealing to both serious natural-history readers and general wildlife enthusiasts.
Golden Shadows, Flying Hooves is especially attractive as a collectable natural-history title, retaining its original photographic dust jacket featuring African lions. It is a worthwhile addition to collections devoted to African wildlife, mammalogy, predator ecology, conservation, natural history and classic wildlife writing.
