Gundogs – Training and Field Trials by P. R. A. Moxon

Gundogs: Training and Field Trials by P.R.A. Moxon is a respected classic in the field of sporting dog training and one of the most enduring titles published by Popular Dogs. Written by an experienced authority on working dogs, this practical guide provides valuable instruction for owners, trainers, handlers, and enthusiasts involved in the training and handling of gundogs for both field work and competitive trials.

Gundogs covers the principles of obedience, retrieving, steadiness, handling techniques, field trial preparation, and the development of reliable working relationships between handler and dog. Moxon’s clear and methodical approach made this volume a favourite among generations of sporting dog owners, particularly those working with spaniels, retrievers, and other hunting breeds. The work combines practical training advice with insights into the standards and expectations of organised field trials, making it useful both as a training manual and as a historical reference on mid-twentieth-century gundog practices.

This 1974 tenth revised edition was published by Popular Dogs Publishing Co. Ltd. and remains highly sought after by collectors of canine literature, sporting dog enthusiasts, breeders, trainers, and those interested in the history of dog training. Gundogs is well illustrated and presents a fascinating snapshot of traditional British gundog training methods.

A desirable addition to any canine reference library, hunting collection, or sporting bookshelf, this volume continues to offer practical wisdom and historical interest more than fifty years after publication.
