Handboek oor Veesiektes – H.O. Mönnig & F.J. Veldman (Tweede Druk, 1954)

Handboek oor Veesiektes by H.O. Mönnig and F.J. Veldman is an important mid-twentieth-century South African veterinary reference work published in Afrikaans. Issued by Nasionale Boekhandel in 1954, this second edition was designed to provide farmers, agricultural students, veterinarians, and livestock managers with practical information relating to the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases affecting cattle, sheep, goats, horses, and other farm animals.

Handboek oor Veesiektes reflects the state of veterinary science and animal husbandry in South Africa during the 1950s and offers fascinating insight into historical livestock management practices. Works of this nature played a significant role in supporting the agricultural economy of the Union of South Africa and remain valuable references for researchers studying farming history, veterinary development, agricultural education, and rural life.

Today, Handboek oor Veesiektes appeals to collectors of Africana, veterinary medicine, agricultural history, and Afrikaans non-fiction. Copies are increasingly difficult to find in the trade, particularly early editions issued by Nasionale Boekhandel. Handboek oor Veesiektes serves as both a practical historical reference and an interesting record of livestock disease management in South Africa during the post-war period.
