Complete two-volume edition of the classic sporting novel Handley Cross or Mr Jorrocks’s Hunt by R. S. Surtees, beautifully illustrated in colour by Cecil Aldin and published by Edward Arnold, London, circa 1911. Bound in the original red cloth with gilt titles and mounted hunting figure to each upper board, this handsome Edwardian set captures the spirit of English fox-hunting and country life.
Handley Cross contains numerous color plates and text illustrations by the celebrated sporting artist Cecil Aldin, whose work is especially sought after by collectors of hunting, horse and canine books. The top edges of the text blocks retain their original gilt, still visible though now faded with age. Despite the noted condition issues, the books remain attractive shelf pieces and useful reading copies of one of Surtees’ most famous works.
Condition – Good
Original red cloth boards worn and stained, with fraying and loss at the spine ends of both volumes. Volume I spine is partially detached at the rear hinge and also separating between the front endpaper and inner cover. Volume II has a similar weakness at the rear inner hinge. Top edges gilt, faded but still visible. Previous owner names in ink to the front endpapers of both volumes. Pages are lightly toned with occasional foxing and staining to the endpapers, but both volumes appear complete and generally sound.
