Her Name Is Woman is a fascinating 1974 commemorative publication produced by the Country Women’s Association of Western Australia, celebrating the achievements, contributions and enduring influence of women throughout Western Australia’s history. Compiled by R. Erickson, B. Gibbings and L. Higgins, this substantial illustrated hardcover brings together historical accounts, biographies, photographs and records documenting the remarkable role women played in shaping communities across one of Australia’s largest states. Published during the International Women’s Year era, the volume reflects growing recognition of women’s contributions to agriculture, education, healthcare, community development and public life.
Her Name Is Woman is made even more distinctive by a contemporary presentation inscription reading, “To The Ridge, my Institute, with love from Maxine Parker,” together with an earlier inscription from the Country Women’s Association of Western Australia. Such provenance adds character and historical interest, particularly for collectors of CWA material and institutional histories.
Her Name Is Woman is an excellent reference for historians, genealogists, researchers and collectors interested in Australian social history, women’s studies and Western Australian heritage. Richly illustrated and well produced, it provides valuable insight into rural life, voluntary organisations and the evolution of women’s roles during the twentieth century. Copies are increasingly difficult to locate outside Australia, making this an attractive acquisition for libraries and private collections alike.
