Herinneringen aan President Krüger – A scarce and historically important Dutch-language Africana booklet titled Herinneringen aan President Krüger by Dr. W. J. Leyds, one of President Paul Kruger’s closest political associates and a central figure in the diplomatic efforts of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek during and after the Anglo-Boer War.
Herinneringen aan President Krüger contains Leyds’ personal recollections and observations of President Kruger, offering unique firsthand insight into the character, leadership, intellect, and political methods of one of the most iconic figures in South African history. Particularly noteworthy is the introductory note stating that the work was originally written aboard the Batavier in 1904 while Kruger’s sarcophagus was being transported from Holland to Cape Town. This direct association with one of the most emotional moments in Boer nationalist history adds considerable historical significance to the booklet.
Works by and about W. J. Leyds remain highly collectible within the Africana and Boer War market, especially original early printings and ephemeral publications such as pamphlets and commemorative booklets. Due to their fragile format and comparatively limited survival rate, such items are encountered far less frequently than standard Boer War histories or later Kruger biographies.
Herinneringen aan President Krüger is printed in Dutch and preserves strong period typography and original wraps, making it an appealing collectible for enthusiasts of Boer Republic history, ZAR politics, Dutch South African relations, and Anglo-Boer War memorabilia. Herinneringen aan President Krüger is an excellent addition to any serious Africana collection, particularly those focused on President Paul Kruger, Boer leadership, or rare South African historical ephemera.
