Highways and Byways in London by Mrs. E. T. Cook is one of the finest illustrated guides to Edwardian London, combining engaging historical commentary with the unforgettable artwork of Hugh Thomson and F. L. Griggs. Originally published in 1902, this 1920 Macmillan reprint captures the atmosphere of London’s streets, churches, bridges, palaces and hidden corners at a time when the city was undergoing rapid change.
Rather than serving as a conventional travel guide, Highways and Byways in London invites readers on a series of leisurely walks through the capital, exploring famous landmarks alongside lesser-known lanes, courtyards and riverside districts. Mrs. Cook’s elegant prose is enriched by detailed historical anecdotes, literary references and architectural observations, making the volume as rewarding for historians as it is for collectors and lovers of London.
The numerous black-and-white illustrations by Hugh Thomson and F. L. Griggs are among the book’s greatest attractions. Their finely executed drawings capture the charm and character of London’s historic buildings and streetscapes, transforming the volume into both a work of art and an important historical record.
Published in the publisher’s original blue cloth with striking gilt lettering to the front board and spine, this handsome edition is increasingly sought after by collectors of illustrated books, Macmillan publications, London history and the celebrated Highways and Byways series. Highways and Byways in London also makes an excellent gift for anyone interested in British history, architecture or classic travel literature.
A timeless celebration of one of the world’s great cities, Highways and Byways in London remains as informative and enjoyable today as when it was first published over a century ago.
