1 in stock
A scarce and attractive 1948 reprint of Hints to Riflemen by H. W. S. Cleveland, originally published in 1864 and widely regarded as one of the classic 19th-century works on rifle shooting and marksmanship. This special edition was produced for the New Jersey Arms Collectors Club and bound in dark green cloth with gilt lettering to the spine and upper board.
Hints to Riflemen covers rifle practice, shooting technique, target work, the effective use of rifles in the field, and contemporary mid-19th century observations on military and sporting firearms. Illustrated with engraved plates and views, including scenes such as “View on Cheat River, Va.”, it remains an important title for collectors of antique firearms, military history, shooting sports and Americana.
Of particular interest is the ownership stamp to the frontis verso reading “D. M. Castell-Castell – British South African Police”, giving the volume an appealing Southern African and Rhodesiana connection that should enhance its desirability to local collectors.
Condition – Very Good
Dark green cloth boards with moderate edge and corner wear and slight rubbing. Gilt titling remains clear and attractive. Internally clean and well-preserved with only light scattered foxing. Frontis verso bears the stamp “D. M. Castell-Castell British South African Police” together with a handwritten “30”. Binding remains firm and sound.
