Images of Power: Understanding Bushman Rock Art by David Lewis-Williams and Thomas Dowson is an important and highly regarded study of southern African San, or Bushman, rock art. Published by Southern Book Publishers in Johannesburg in 1989, this copy is particularly desirable as the first edition, first impression.
Rather than treating southern African rock paintings simply as illustrations of hunting, animals or everyday life, Images of Power explores the deeper cultural, spiritual and symbolic meanings behind the images. Drawing on archaeological research, ethnographic evidence and the recorded beliefs and practices of San communities, the authors examine how rock art can provide insight into ritual, altered states of consciousness, shamanistic practices and the complex worldview of the people who created these remarkable paintings.
David Lewis-Williams became one of the leading international authorities on San rock art, and his research played an influential role in changing scholarly interpretations of prehistoric and indigenous rock imagery. Together with Thomas Dowson, he presents an accessible introduction to a subject that bridges archaeology, anthropology, indigenous history, religion and southern African cultural heritage.
Illustrated with examples of Bushman paintings and incorporating both monochrome and colour sections, Images of Power is an especially worthwhile reference for collectors of Africana and books relating to San culture, archaeology and southern African history. It is also an excellent addition to collections focusing on rock paintings, indigenous belief systems, anthropology and African art.
