In Search of the Sahara by Quentin Crewe

In Search of the Sahara is an engaging account of one of the world’s most legendary deserts, written by acclaimed travel writer Quentin Crewe and illustrated throughout with striking photographs by Tim Beddow. Published in 1983, this beautifully produced first edition combines adventurous travel writing with exceptional documentary photography, offering readers a vivid exploration of the immense landscapes, ancient caravan routes, remote settlements and diverse cultures of the Sahara Desert.

Crewe’s narrative goes far beyond a simple travel diary. With wit, curiosity and keen observation, he records encounters with the people who call the Sahara home while reflecting on the history, geography and enduring mysteries of this vast region stretching across North Africa. The accompanying photographs capture dramatic dunes, desert oases, traditional nomadic life and historic settlements, making In Search of the Sahara as visually compelling as it is informative.

The large-format production and high-quality photographic plates make this an attractive addition to any library devoted to African exploration, desert landscapes, travel literature or photographic works. In Search of the Sahara will appeal equally to collectors of African travel books, students of geography and history, and anyone fascinated by the romance and challenges of desert exploration.

This first edition remains one of Quentin Crewe’s most attractive travel books and is becoming increasingly difficult to locate in such well-preserved condition. A handsome copy that would make an excellent gift or a desirable addition to any Africana, exploration or travel collection.
