Indaba, My Children: African Folk Tales by Vusamazulu Credo Mutwa is a landmark collection of African mythology, traditional history, legends and oral storytelling. First published in South Africa in 1964, the work preserves stories and teachings that had been transmitted through generations by storytellers, elders and custodians of indigenous knowledge. This Grove Press edition brings Mutwa’s celebrated work to a broad international readership while retaining its distinctive African voice and narrative richness.
Credo Mutwa draws upon Zulu tradition and the wider cultural inheritance of the African continent to recount tales involving ancient rulers, warriors, supernatural beings, creation traditions and the relationships between people, nature and the spiritual world. Indaba, My Children combines folklore, history, moral instruction, religious belief and dramatic adventure, offering readers a fascinating introduction to African traditional thought and storytelling.
More than simply an anthology of folk tales, Indaba, My Children is also an important work of African cultural history. Mutwa sought to preserve oral traditions that risked being forgotten or distorted as African societies changed. His vivid prose gives the stories the feeling of being spoken directly by a traditional storyteller, making this substantial volume both accessible and memorable.
Indaba, My Children is particularly suitable for readers and collectors interested in African folklore, Zulu culture, indigenous knowledge, mythology, anthropology, comparative religion, oral history and South African literature.
