Indaba, My Children by Vusamazulu Credo Mutwa is a landmark work of African storytelling, cultural history and traditional belief. Drawing upon generations of oral tradition, Mutwa presents a wide-ranging collection of African legends, tribal histories, customs, spiritual teachings and accounts of the origins of different peoples. The book brings together mythology, folklore, social practice and religious thought in a narrative style that reflects the importance of storytelling in preserving indigenous knowledge.
Throughout the work, Mutwa explores ancestral memory, creation traditions, leadership, conflict, migration, family life and humanity’s relationship with the spiritual and natural worlds. Indaba, My Children offers valuable insight into African worldviews while also illustrating how oral traditions were used to explain history, morality and cultural identity. Although frequently classified as folklore, the book extends beyond a simple collection of tales and may also be read as an important contribution to African cultural studies, indigenous history and comparative religion.
Credo Mutwa was a prominent South African author, artist and traditional healer whose writings helped introduce African mythology and Zulu spiritual traditions to an international readership. Indaba, My Children remains his best-known publication and is widely sought after by readers interested in Africana, African mythology, indigenous knowledge, anthropology, folklore and traditional spirituality.
