Instant Oil Painting by Noel Gregory

Instant Oil Painting by Noel Gregory is an accessible and practical guide for artists who want to discover how quickly and effectively they can work in oils. Published by Search Press in 2006, this 96-page paperback is part of the Oil Painting Tips and Techniques series and is particularly well suited to beginners and developing artists looking for straightforward instruction and practical inspiration.

The premise of Instant Oil Painting is simple: oil painting does not necessarily have to involve weeks or months of painstaking work. Noel Gregory demonstrates how to approach a painting spontaneously and confidently, with the aim of producing finished pictures in less than a day. His approach encourages artists to concentrate on capturing the character of a subject rather than becoming lost in excessive detail.

The book contains more than 150 photographs and a series of clearly explained step-by-step demonstrations. Gregory covers a variety of subjects, including landscapes, portraits, still lifes, flowers and other familiar painting subjects. His demonstrations are accompanied by practical hints, technical advice and suggestions for developing an individual approach to oil painting.

Gregory’s own approach is energetic and painterly. He frequently uses impasto techniques and brushes rather than relying on palette knives, producing paintings with a fresh and expressive quality. The demonstrations are designed to make the progression from initial idea to completed painting easy to follow, making this a useful reference for someone who has recently begun experimenting with oils.

Noel Gregory studied at High Wycombe College of Art and Bournemouth Teacher Training College. He subsequently spent many years running an art gallery in Buckinghamshire before establishing himself as a successful professional oil painter, working from his studio in Spain and exhibiting and selling his work internationally. He also wrote numerous practical art books published by Search Press.

For aspiring artists, hobby painters and anyone wanting to become more confident with oils, Instant Oil Painting offers an encouraging introduction to spontaneous, expressive painting and provides plenty of practical ideas to put into practice.
