Jewish Life in the South African Country Communities: Volume I – The Northern Great Escarpment, The Lowveld, The Northern Highveld, The Bushveld is an important illustrated record of Jewish settlement, community life and heritage in the smaller towns and rural regions of South Africa. Researched by the South African Friends of Beth Hatefutsoth and published in Johannesburg in 2002, this substantial volume forms part of the respected series documenting Jewish life beyond South Africa’s major urban centres.
Jewish Life in the South African Country Communities was prepared by Adrienne Kollenberg, Rose Norwich, Joan Gentin and Phyllis Jowell, with photographs collected by Yvonne Jawitz and Joy Kropman. Volume I documents Jewish communities across 37 country towns, preserving personal recollections, family histories, photographs and community records that might otherwise have been lost.
The geographical coverage is extensive, including Barberton, Dullstroom, Graskop, Lydenburg, Machadodorp, Pilgrim’s Rest, Sabie, Waterval-Boven, Nelspruit, Phalaborwa, Tzaneen, White River, Belfast, Bronkhorstspruit, Cullinan, Middelburg, Witbank, Brits, Louis Trichardt, Messina, Nylstroom, Pietersburg, Potgietersrus, Thabazimbi, Warmbaths and numerous other communities.
Richly illustrated with historic photographs and supplemented by a timeline, glossary, sources and index, Jewish Life in the South African Country Communities provides an invaluable reference for South African Jewish history, genealogy, Africana and local history. It records the businesses, families, religious organisations and everyday experiences that shaped Jewish country life and provides an important social history of communities that have changed dramatically or disappeared altogether.
