Jewish London – An Illustrated History by Dr Gerry Black is a large-format hardcover published in Great Britain in 2003 by The Breedon Books Publishing Company of Derby. It was printed and bound by Butler & Tanner of Frome, Somerset, and carries a dedication from the author to his grandchildren.
Jewish London follows Jewish life in London across more than nine centuries, from the small group who arrived with William the Conqueror, through the expulsion of 1290 and the return under Oliver Cromwell and Menasseh ben Israel, to the Sephardi and Ashkenazi communities, the Board of Deputies, the Chief Rabbinate and the great charitable and educational institutions. Later chapters cover the mass immigration of 1881 to 1914, the Poor Jews’ Temporary Shelter, the Jack the Ripper case and the Sidney Street siege, and the trades of the East End: cabinet making, tobacco, boots and shoes, slipper making and the early trade unions.
Jewish London is supported throughout by archive photographs and illustrations of streets, shopfronts, synagogues and people, beginning with the striking jacket image of R. Mazin & Co., Hebrew, English and foreign booksellers and publishers, established 1891. The story is carried right up to the present day, including the arrivals from Germany and Austria before the Second World War and from Egypt, Hungary, Iraq, Iran and India after it.
Jewish London will appeal to readers of London and East End history, Jewish genealogy and family history researchers, students of immigration and social history, and collectors of Judaica and illustrated British local history.
