Jock of the Bushveld by Sir Percy FitzPatrick is one of the enduring classics of South African literature, recounting the adventures of FitzPatrick and his celebrated dog Jock against the rugged backdrop of the old Transvaal bushveld. First published in 1907, the story grew from FitzPatrick’s experiences during the pioneering days of the 1880s, when he worked as a transport rider in the Lowveld during the era of the eastern Transvaal gold rush.
This 1963 Longmans edition retains the illustrations of E. Caldwell, whose distinctive artwork has been closely associated with the book since its earliest publication. FitzPatrick combines adventure, hunting, wildlife, transport-riding and observations of life in the South African interior, while the relationship between Jock and his master provides the heart of the narrative. The result is Jock of the Bushveld, a work that has remained popular with generations of South African readers and has become an important part of the country’s literary heritage.
This copy is bound in reddish-orange cloth with gilt lettering to the spine and a gilt antelope-head device to the front board. Jock of the Bushveld is an attractive vintage edition for collectors of Africana, South African literature, hunting and wildlife writing, historical travel and classic adventure stories. Later Longmans editions are considerably more affordable than the highly collectable 1907 first editions, making this a good representative vintage copy for a South African collection.
Condition – Good
The hardcover remains sound, but the cloth boards show substantial mottled fading, rubbing and general surface wear, particularly around the edges and across the front board and spine. The gilt decoration and lettering remain visible. There is noticeable foxing and age-related spotting to the edges of the text block.
