Journey of Souls by Michael Newton is a landmark work in modern metaphysical literature, exploring ideas about reincarnation, the afterlife and what the author describes as the period between physical lives. Originally published by Llewellyn in 1994, the book became the first volume in Newton’s Journey of Souls series and established his approach to what he called “Life Between Lives” regression. This copy is an 11th printing from 2001, making it a contemporary example of the book’s early editions.
Newton was a hypnotherapist with a doctorate in counselling psychology who developed a specialised form of hypnotic regression. In Journey of Souls, he presents case studies based on 29 subjects whom he says recalled experiences between incarnations while under hypnosis. Llewellyn describes the book as an exploration of what happens after death, including the experience of leaving the physical body, encounters with spiritual guides, soul groups, reincarnation and the selection of a new body.
The book is structured almost as a journey through Newton’s proposed spiritual realm. Readers encounter chapters concerning death and departure, the gateway to the spirit world, orientation, transition, spiritual guides, different levels of souls, life selection, choosing a new body and eventual rebirth.
Newton’s work has been influential within New Age and alternative spirituality circles, particularly among readers interested in past-life regression and theories of consciousness beyond physical existence. His claims should be understood as metaphysical interpretations based on hypnotic regression rather than established scientific evidence, but the popularity of the book demonstrates its considerable cultural influence.
