This attractive nineteenth-century edition of Juvenal’s Third, Fourth and Fifth Satires was edited by the noted German classical scholar Carolus Ludovicus (Karl Ludwig) Roth and published in Nuremberg (Norimbergae) in 1841 by J. A. Stein. Produced as an educational edition for students of the classics, the volume presents the original Latin text accompanied by detailed scholarly annotations that explain historical references, grammar and literary context. Such editions formed an important part of the rigorous classical curriculum taught throughout Europe during the nineteenth century and remain highly regarded by collectors of classical literature and the history of education.
Juvenal’s Third, Fourth and Fifth Satires is bound in its original orange cloth decorated with an elegant gilt laurel wreath enclosing the date “1842” on the front cover, with a gilt Bavarian-style crest on the rear cover and decorative gilt borders to both boards. These decorative publisher’s bindings are increasingly sought after as examples of early Victorian book production. The volume retains its original black-dyed page edges, a feature that adds to its period appeal.
Juvenal’s biting satires remain among the greatest surviving works of Roman literature, offering sharp observations on corruption, wealth, morality and daily life in Imperial Rome. This edition is particularly desirable for collectors interested in Latin classics, nineteenth-century educational publishing, Roman history and antique books. Its compact size and original decorative binding make it an attractive display piece while remaining fully usable for reading and study.
Juvenal’s Third, Fourth and Fifth Satires An excellent addition to collections of classical literature, antiquarian books, Roman history or nineteenth-century European educational texts.
