Karoo Moose

Karoo Moose by acclaimed South African playwright and theatre director Lara Foot Newton is one of the most powerful and celebrated contemporary South African plays of the twenty-first century. Published by Oberon Books in 2009, this dramatic work explores themes of poverty, violence, loss, hope, and resilience against the stark and evocative backdrop of the Karoo.

The play centres on the life of a young girl living in a remote rural community where dreams and opportunities are often overshadowed by hardship. Through poetic language, symbolic imagery, and compelling storytelling, Foot Newton crafts a deeply moving portrait of life on the margins of South African society. Karoo Moose combines elements of realism and theatrical symbolism, creating a dramatic experience that is both emotionally engaging and socially relevant.

Karoo Moose achieved significant critical acclaim and has been performed internationally, earning recognition for its unique theatrical style and powerful exploration of contemporary South African issues. The text is widely studied by drama students, theatre practitioners, educators, and readers interested in modern South African literature.

Karoo Moose forms part of the respected Oberon Modern Plays series and remains an important contribution to post-apartheid South African theatre. A valuable addition to collections focusing on drama, performance studies, African literature, and contemporary South African cultural works.
