Koi Kichi (Deluxe Edition)

Koi Kichi (Deluxe Edition) by Peter Waddington, published in 1995 by Peter Waddington, is a scarce and highly regarded work devoted to the art, culture, and appreciation of Nishikigoi, the ornamental carp more commonly known as koi. Produced as a limited deluxe edition, with this copy numbered 3 of only 500, the book occupies a special place among serious koi enthusiasts, collectors, and students of Japanese aesthetic traditions. Its limited production and specialist focus make it both a reference work and a collectable object in its own right.

Peter Waddington approaches the subject of koi with deep enthusiasm and informed observation, examining not only the varieties and physical characteristics of koi but also the philosophy and dedication that surround their breeding and appreciation. The book explores colour, pattern, form, and movement, emphasising how these elements are evaluated within koi culture. Rather than presenting koi simply as decorative fish, Koi Kichi conveys the discipline, patience, and discernment required to truly understand and value them.

A defining feature of this deluxe edition is its visual presentation. The book is lavishly illustrated with high-quality colour photography that captures koi at their most striking, revealing subtle gradations of colour and the elegance of their movement in water. The production values reflect the care taken with the subject matter, reinforcing the book’s status as a premium publication intended for a discerning audience.

Published in 1995, Koi Kichi (Deluxe Edition) remains a sought-after title within koi literature. As a numbered limited edition, it holds particular appeal for collectors, while its thoughtful text and exceptional imagery ensure its continuing relevance for those deeply engaged in the world of koi appreciation and breeding.
