Kontakion for You Departed

Kontakion for You Departed by renowned South African author Alan Paton, best known for Cry, the Beloved Country, is a deeply personal and moving tribute written in memory of his wife. First published in 1969 by Jonathan Cape, London, the book blends memoir, reflection, and social commentary, offering insight into both Paton’s personal grief and the broader political landscape of South Africa during the apartheid era.

The title derives from the Greek Orthodox word “Kontakion,” meaning a hymn for the departed, reflecting the book’s tone of reverence and remembrance. Through his reflections, Paton recounts the life of his wife Dorrie, their shared experiences, and the challenges faced by those opposing apartheid in mid-20th century South Africa.

Kontakion for You Departed remains an important piece of South African literary history, valued by collectors of Paton’s works and readers interested in the personal life of one of the country’s most influential writers.

Published by Jonathan Cape, London, and printed in Great Britain by Butler & Tanner Ltd, this 1969 first edition is an attractive example of Kontakion for You Departed, one of Paton’s later writings.
