A remarkable and highly decorative African tribal power figure in the traditional Songye style, hand carved from hardwood and standing an impressive 75 cm tall. Richly adorned with metal rings, cowrie shells, a copper nose ring and an elaborate ritualistic surface treatment, this striking sculpture is an exceptional display piece for collectors of African tribal art, ethnographic artefacts and traditional ceremonial carvings.
The elongated female figure is distinguished by its expressive face, featuring shell-inlaid eyes, a prominent copper nose ring and textured leather-like facial coverings secured with numerous metal studs, creating a powerful visual effect. The rounded ears are pierced with deep circular openings, while the rear of the head is decorated with embedded cowrie shells. Rising from the crown is what appears to be a bone or wooden ritual insert wrapped in cloth and secured with traditional fibre binding, further enhancing its ceremonial appearance.
The long neck is formed with four distinct rings and is adorned with a bead necklace. Below, the body is entirely covered with repeated breast-like projections arranged in tiers, each fitted with a copper ring, creating an extraordinary sculptural composition seldom encountered. The swollen abdomen, suggestive of pregnancy, is further embellished with cowrie shells and symbolic detailing, while the female genitalia are clearly carved in accordance with traditional artistic Songye conventions. The figure stands barefoot on a solid circular wooden base, providing excellent stability and an imposing presence.
With its remarkable combination of carved detail, applied materials and commanding scale, this Songye style power figure is both an impressive decorative sculpture and a fine example of African-inspired tribal artistry.
Condition – Very good vintage condition with an attractive aged patina throughout
Minor age-related wear is present, consistent with use and age. The applied cowrie shells, metal rings, bead necklace and nose ring remain largely intact, while the cloth-covered ritual insert at the top retains its original fibre binding. Overall, the sculpture presents exceptionally well.
