Leagues of Nations – Ancient, Mediaeval, and Modern by Elizabeth York is an historically significant work of political history and international relations, published in 1919 by The Swarthmore Press Ltd. in London. This original antique hardcover offers a fascinating examination of the development of international cooperation, political alliances and the pursuit of lasting peace throughout human history.
Published immediately following the First World War, during the negotiations that would lead to the establishment of the League of Nations, Leagues of Nations explores the historical foundations of international organisations and the centuries-old ambition to achieve peace through cooperation between sovereign states.
Leagues of Nations is particularly relevant to collectors of First World War history, early twentieth-century political literature, diplomatic history and historical works concerning international peace movements. Its publication in 1919 places it at a pivotal moment in world history, when the devastating consequences of the Great War encouraged renewed efforts towards international cooperation.
Presented in its original blue cloth hardcover binding with gilt spine lettering, this century-old publication represents an appealing addition to any collection of antiquarian history books, historical political science publications or literature concerning the origins of modern international relations.
Leagues of Nations – Condition – Good
Original 1919 hardcover bound in blue cloth with gilt-stamped title, author and publisher details on the spine. The boards show general age-related shelf wear, with rubbing along the edges, bumped and worn corners and wear to the spine extremities. The gilt lettering remains clearly legible. Internally, the front pastedown bears an attractive vintage H. T. Andrews bookplate, together with a small pencil notation.
The endpapers display noticeable age-related discolouration, staining and foxing. The text block edges are browned, with general age-related toning evident. A respectable surviving example of this historically interesting publication, with wear and discolouration consistent with its considerable age.
