Like Lions They Fought: The Zulu War and the Last Black Empire in South Africa by Robert B. Edgerton is a compelling and highly readable account of one of the most dramatic conflicts in South African history. Focusing on the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879, Edgerton presents a balanced examination of both the British Empire and the Zulu Kingdom, exploring the political, military and cultural forces that led to a confrontation which would change the future of southern Africa.
Drawing on historical records, eyewitness accounts and modern scholarship, Like Lions They Fought vividly recreates the campaigns, personalities and battles that have become legendary. Readers are taken from the rise of the Zulu Kingdom under Shaka through to the final struggles against British imperial expansion. The famous battles of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift are examined in detail, offering insight into the courage, strategy and determination displayed by both sides.
Unlike many earlier histories that focused primarily on British perspectives, Edgerton gives significant attention to the Zulu experience, creating a fuller and more nuanced understanding of the conflict. This makes Like Lions They Fought particularly valuable for students of African history, military enthusiasts, researchers and collectors of Africana.
Like Lions They Fought remains an important contribution to the study of nineteenth-century South Africa and is recommended reading for anyone interested in colonial history, indigenous resistance movements, military campaigns and the remarkable legacy of the Zulu nation.
Condition – Very Good
1988 hardcover in a very good dust jacket. The jacket shows moderate edge wear, creasing and light shelf wear, particularly along the upper edges. The burgundy cloth boards remain clean and sound with bright gilt titling to the spine. Internally, the book is complete and securely bound; however, there is heavy foxing throughout the text block and on many pages, as visible in the photographs. Despite the foxing, the text remains clear and fully legible throughout. A solid reading and reference copy of an increasingly sought-after Zulu War title.
