Living the Dream Through Africa

Living the Dream Through Africa by Schalk van der Merwe is an engaging travel memoir and photographic chronicle first published in 2016. This volume captures van der Merwe’s remarkable solo motorcycle expedition across the African continent, a journey of more than 33 000 km through 18 countries that transformed a dream into reality. The story is enriched with narrative reflection and a wealth of vivid colour photography, offering readers both inspiration and practical insight into long‑distance adventure travel.

In Living the Dream Through Africa, van der Merwe recounts the highs and lows of his epic African crossing. The narrative blends logistical detail—covering roads, border crossings, policing, accommodation, and food—with personal moments that reveal the emotional impact of confronting unfamiliar cultures and landscapes. The book’s format, combining nearly 400 striking photographs with insightful commentary, creates an immersive record that appeals to both armchair travellers and seasoned adventurers alike. By sharing not only triumphs but also challenges encountered on the road, van der Merwe invites readers to consider their own aspirations and the rewards of stepping beyond comfort zones.

While Living the Dream Through Africa does not carry a traditional mainstream publishing imprint, it is known to have been released as a self‑published or independently produced edition, sold directly by the author and through second‑hand platforms. This independence underscores the personal nature of the project and reflects the author’s hands‑on involvement in both journey and book‑making process. Copies—particularly first editions and signed versions—are sought after by collectors of travel adventure literature and motorcycle memoirs.

Ideal for readers drawn to real‑life adventure, exploration, and the spirit of self‑discovery, Living the Dream Through Africa stands as a vivid tribute to one man’s quest to ride, learn, and live fully across the varied terrains of Africa.
