Lorna Doone by R. D. Blackmore is one of the enduring classics of Victorian English literature, presented here in an attractive small-format vintage hardcover edition published by Collins of London & Glasgow. First published in 1869, Blackmore’s celebrated novel combines romance, adventure, historical drama and vivid descriptions of the English countryside, particularly the dramatic landscape of Exmoor on the borders of Devon and Somerset.
Set during the turbulent Stuart period of the seventeenth century, the story centres on John Ridd, whose life becomes intertwined with the beautiful Lorna Doone. The Doones are a feared and lawless clan living in an isolated Exmoor valley, and John’s growing love for Lorna places him at the centre of a story involving family rivalry, danger, loyalty and revenge. Blackmore’s evocative portrayal of rural England is an important part of the novel’s lasting appeal, with the landscape almost becoming a character in its own right.
This Collins edition is particularly appealing as a compact vintage reading copy. It features brown cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering and decorative gilt detailing to the spine, together with an illustrated frontispiece. The understated period binding gives the book an attractive traditional appearance suitable for a collection of classic literature or vintage Collins editions.
The volume is undated. Similar Collins editions in this style are known from the early-to-mid twentieth century, and without a dated publication statement it is safest to catalogue this copy simply as undated rather than assigning a specific year.
Condition – Very Good
Small-format hardcover in very good condition. General light shelf wear and age-related wear to the cloth boards and extremities. Prior ownership inscription in ink is present. Foxing and age-related spotting are present internally. No dust jacket.
