Mac – The Face of Rugby is the compelling autobiography of legendary South African rugby coach Ian McIntosh, written in collaboration with respected sports journalist John Bishop. Published in 2000, this first edition offers a fascinating and remarkably candid account of one of the most influential figures in South African rugby history.
Born in Bulawayo, Rhodesia, Ian McIntosh rose to prominence as the hugely successful coach of Natal rugby before taking charge of the Springboks during a turbulent period following South Africa’s return to international rugby in the early 1990s. His innovative coaching methods, emphasis on direct rugby and remarkable ability to inspire players helped transform Natal into a formidable rugby force, laying important foundations for the province’s subsequent success.
McIntosh provides an unusually frank account of his experiences within South African rugby, discussing the personalities, politics and controversies that shaped his career. Among the subjects covered in Mac – The Face of Rugby are his dismissal as Springbok coach by Louis Luyt, his complicated relationship with legendary fullback André Joubert, his dealings with James Small, and his reaction to the controversial exclusion of Gary Teichmann from the 1999 Rugby World Cup squad.
Mac – The Face of Rugby also explores his relationship with Nick Mallett and the challenges of managing some of South Africa’s most talented and outspoken rugby personalities. Illustrated with photographs, this absorbing biography provides valuable insight into the development of professional rugby in South Africa.
Of particular collectable interest, this copy features personal inscriptions by both Ian McIntosh and John Bishop on the endpaper, addressed to an individual named Mike. McIntosh’s lengthy handwritten dedication affectionately refers to Mike as “Mountain Goat” and recalls memories of rugby, shouting at referees and, most importantly, their friendship over many years. Bishop’s inscription similarly recalls happy rugby memories. Additionally, Ian McIntosh has signed the title page.
