Majuba – Dramatiese voorvalle in die Eerste Vryheidsoorlog 1880 -1881

Majuba : Dramatiese voorvalle in die Eerste Vryheidsoorlog 1880‑1881 deur V.E. d’Assonville (Marnix, 1996) is a compact Afrikaans historical overview of the First Boer War (1880–1881), focusing on dramatic events and key engagements such as the Battle of Majuba Hill and other confrontations between Boer forces and the British. This softcover edition, published in 1996, runs to approximately 63 pages and delivers an accessible introduction to the conflict’s most pivotal moments for readers of all backgrounds.

The book examines significant encounters in the war that began in December 1880, including early actions such as the Battle of Bronkhorstspruit and subsequent clashes that culminated in the decisive Boer victory at Majuba Hill on 27 February 1881. That battle, in particular, proved crucial in bringing about the end of hostilities and shaping the terms of peace, marking a rare British defeat in colonial military affairs.

Written in clear Afrikaans, Majuba blends narrative with selected incident accounts that aim to capture both the drama and historical significance of these events. It is designed to be accessible to general readers while still providing enough context and detail to be meaningful to students of South African history. The text is suitable for use in educational settings as well as casual reading by those interested in the formative conflicts of the Transvaal Republic and the Boer struggle for sovereignty.

As a 1996 Marnix publication, this edition reflects the publisher’s longstanding focus on South African historical and cultural titles in Afrikaans, and it remains a useful pocket‑size reference for readers seeking to understand the milestones of the First Vryheidsoorlog.
