The 1943 American publication of Mein Kampf introduced Ralph Manheim’s English translation to an international readership during a pivotal period in the Second World War. This translation subsequently became one of the most widely circulated English-language versions of the work.
Of particular bibliographical interest is the book’s wartime American publication. Its Houghton Mifflin imprint and printing by The Riverside Press distinguish it from earlier British editions, German-language publications and subsequent modern reproductions.
This edition is relevant to the study of twentieth-century European history, the Second World War, Nazi ideology, wartime publishing and the historical development of political propaganda.
As an original wartime publication, Mein Kampf also holds bibliographical interest for collectors of historical books, antiquarian publications and Second World War literature.
Mein Kampf is presented as a historical primary source documenting Hitler’s ideology, which underpinned the Nazi regime’s persecution and genocide, rather than as a reliable account of historical events.
