Memoirs of Frederick A. P. Barnard – Tenth President of Columbia College in the City of New York by John Fulton is an original 1896 hardcover biography documenting the life and achievements of one of nineteenth-century America’s most influential educators, scientists and university administrators. Published for Columbia University Press by Macmillan and Co., this historical volume offers a fascinating account of the development of American higher education during a period of significant social and intellectual change.
Frederick Augustus Porter Barnard (1809–1889) was an American mathematician, scientist, clergyman and educational reformer who served as the tenth president of Columbia College, now Columbia University. Educated at Yale, Barnard held academic positions at the University of Alabama and the University of Mississippi before assuming the presidency of Columbia in 1864.
John Fulton’s detailed biography explores Barnard’s personal and professional journey, his scientific interests, educational philosophy and considerable influence on the transformation of Columbia College into a modern university. Particularly noteworthy is Barnard’s advocacy for women’s access to higher education, a cause that contributed to his lasting legacy. Barnard College, established in 1889, was named in his honour.
The work also provides valuable historical perspectives on nineteenth-century American society, academic institutions, scientific advancement and the challenges faced by educational reformers during the American Civil War and subsequent decades.
This original Victorian-era publication is of particular interest to collectors of antiquarian books, American historical biographies, university histories and works concerning the development of education and science in the United States.
Published more than 125 years ago, this substantial 485-page biography represents an important historical record of an influential academic figure whose contributions continue to be recognised within American educational history. An appealing addition to a collection of nineteenth-century literature, educational history or historical biographies.
