Published by the Chamber of Mines of South Africa in 1988, Measurements in Mine Environmental Control is an important technical reference documenting the methods, instruments and measurement practices associated with environmental control in the South African mining industry. This is the Second Edition, substantially representing the development of mine environmental and occupational hygiene practice during an important period in South African mining history.
Measurements in Mine Environmental Control grew out of earlier Chamber of Mines manuals dealing with mine air quality and routine mine ventilation measurements. By the 1980s, the responsibilities of mine ventilation departments had expanded into broader environmental control, requiring more sophisticated methods for monitoring conditions affecting underground workers. The 1988 revision incorporated developments in areas such as respirable gravimetric dust sampling and associated measuring equipment.
Designed as a practical professional reference, Measurements in Mine Environmental Control is particularly relevant to mine ventilation officers, environmental control officers, occupational hygienists, mining engineers, health and safety practitioners, researchers and students of mining engineering. It also has historical value as a record of South African mining practice and workplace environmental monitoring before the later development of modern occupational hygiene standards.
Measurements in Mine Environmental Control is attractively produced in black hardcover boards with blind-stamped border decoration and gilt lettering to both the front board and spine. An increasingly specialised South African mining reference, particularly suited to collections dealing with mining engineering, occupational health, industrial hygiene and the history of the South African mining industry.
