Scarce Johannesburg imprint relating to early South African Jewish culture and humour. My Jewish Clients by M. Davidson is an uncommon collection of satirical short stories published by Eagle Press Ltd., Doornfontein, Johannesburg, likely dating to the late 1930s or early 1940s.
Written in a light and humorous tone, Davidson presents a series of anecdotal stories reflecting aspects of Jewish business life, family relationships, social customs and everyday interactions within the Jewish community of early twentieth-century South Africa. Through witty storytelling and gentle satire, the author explores themes such as finance, marriage, ambition, honesty, and the social dynamics of immigrant communities in Johannesburg.
The book consists of numerous short stories including High Finance, The Stock Exchange, Solly’s Mother-in-Law, The Practical Joke, Fear of the Law, and Why Worry? Each story offers a glimpse into the humour, language and cultural character of the period, making the work both entertaining and historically interesting.
Published by the Johannesburg firm Eagle Press at Rockey Street in Doornfontein, the volume represents a small and relatively obscure South African imprint. Copies are seldom encountered today, particularly in their original illustrated paper boards featuring a charming caricature-style cover illustration of a businessman studying a ledger.
Today the book is of interest to collectors of South African Jewish history, early Johannesburg printing, Africana humour, and uncommon South African literary publications. Unusual cultural titles of this nature remain increasingly sought after by collectors of Jewish diaspora literature and South African ephemera.
Condition – Fair
Original illustrated paper boards present with moderate shelf wear, handling marks and general age toning. The spine shows wear and compression and has been neatly re-glued to reinforce the binding. Internally the binding remains sound. Pages show sporadic foxing throughout with heavier foxing to the endpapers. There is some loss to the final page (page 151). Overall a complete and readable example of this scarce Johannesburg imprint.
