Natal Memories by Barbara I. Buchanan is a nostalgic and historically valuable account of early life in the British colony of Natal. Published in 1941 by Shuter & Shooter of Pietermaritzburg, the book preserves recollections, stories, poetry and anecdotes relating to pioneer settlers and the formative years of the region.
The work reflects on the cultural and social environment of colonial Natal, referencing prominent early figures such as Henry Francis Fynn, one of the earliest European settlers connected with the Zulu kingdom and the establishment of Port Natal. Buchanan’s writing blends historical narrative with personal memory, making the book a charming and informative contribution to the literature of KwaZulu-Natal history.
Today Natal Memories remains sought after by collectors of Africana, Nataliana, and South African colonial history, particularly copies bearing the original Pietermaritzburg imprint of Shuter & Shooter.
