Of Mice and Men is one of the defining works of twentieth-century American literature and remains among the most sought-after titles by Nobel Prize-winning author John Steinbeck. First published in 1937, this powerful novella tells the story of George Milton and Lennie Small, two itinerant ranch workers who share a dream of owning their own piece of land during the hardships of the Great Depression. Through its exploration of friendship, loneliness, hope and human dignity, the novel has become a modern classic studied and collected throughout the world.
This desirable early William Heinemann edition features decorations by Michael Rothenstein and retains its scarce original unclipped dust jacket priced at 6s net. Of Mice and Men is bound in the publisher’s distinctive pale blue cloth and retains the attractive pink top-stain to the upper edge of the text block, a feature associated with early issues of this edition. Internally the text remains clean and highly presentable, allowing Steinbeck’s celebrated prose to be enjoyed as intended.
Steinbeck’s enduring popularity among collectors, combined with the relative scarcity of early British editions retaining their original dust jackets, has ensured continued demand for copies such as this. Whether acquired as a reading copy, an investment in modern literature, or an addition to a Steinbeck collection, Of Mice and Men represents an attractive and increasingly difficult-to-find edition of one of the most important American novels of the twentieth century.
Condition – Very Good Hardcover
Of Mice and Men – Pale blue cloth binding remains exceptionally well preserved. Some discoloration is present to the end matter and there is slight age-toning to the text block edges. The text pages are clean throughout and the book retains its original pink top-stain. The original unclipped dust jacket is present but fragile, with browning to the spine, chipping, edge wear, minor loss and the rear hinge almost detached. Despite these faults, the jacket remains remarkably complete and contributes significantly to the book’s collectability.
