Olympia 1936 – A complete and beautifully preserved 1936 German Olympic album containing all 175 original mounted photographs, the original control slip and the complete fold-out colour map—a superb collector’s piece documenting the historic 1936 Winter Olympics and previewing the Berlin Games.
1 in stock
A superb original first edition of Olympia 1936, Band I: Die Olympischen Winterspiele – Vorschau auf Berlin, published in Germany in 1936 to commemorate the IV Olympic Winter Games at Garmisch-Partenkirchen and to introduce the forthcoming XI Olympic Games in Berlin. Produced by Cigaretten-Bilderdienst Altona-Bahrenfeld, this impressive large-format collector’s album is one of the finest illustrated Olympic publications of the pre-war period.
Bound in its original blue cloth with striking black and gilt decoration, Olympia 1936 comprises 127 pages and is complete with all 175 original mounted cigarette photographs, each individually numbered. The photographs are complemented by printed illustrations, maps, architectural drawings and informative historical text documenting the athletes, sporting events, venues and preparations for the 1936 Olympic Games.
This example is particularly desirable as it retains the complete index, the original Kontroll-Nummer (control slip) and the impressive four-page fold-out colour map at the rear. The survival of all these original components, together with the full complement of 175 mounted photographs, makes Olympia 1936 a highly collectible and increasingly difficult volume to find in such well-preserved condition.
Today Olympia 1936 is appreciated as an important historical record of the Olympic movement, early twentieth-century sports photography and German illustrated publishing. While produced during the politically significant 1936 Olympic Games in Germany, it is collected primarily for its sporting, historical and publishing importance. It is an outstanding addition to collections devoted to Olympic history, sports memorabilia, German illustrated books, historical photography and twentieth-century publishing.
Complete examples in comparable condition are becoming increasingly scarce, making Olympia 1936 an excellent acquisition for collectors of Olympic memorabilia, rare books and historical sporting publications.
