On Christmas Eve

On Christmas Eve by Peter Collington, first published in 1990 by Heinemann in London and also issued by Knopf Books for Young Readers in the United States, is a wordless picture book that has become cherished in Christmas collections around the world. This beautifully illustrated title uses imagery alone to tell a magical and heart‑warming story of Santa’s visit on Christmas Eve, offering a universal and engaging narrative for young readers.

Unlike traditional children’s books that rely on text, On Christmas Eve invites readers to immerse themselves in its pages through vivid and detailed artwork. The tale begins when a young girl, snug in bed, has hung her stocking and wondered how Santa Claus will find his way in if her home lacks a chimney. What follows is a gentle and imaginative sequence in which dozens of tiny fairies gather letters, candles, and keys, creating a radiant path that guides Santa to her room. Through Collington’s evocative pictures, this narrative captures the wonder, anticipation, and quiet enchantment of Christmas Eve without a single word spoken.

The art in On Christmas Eve is suffused with soft colours and rich detail, perfectly suited to capturing the holiday’s cosy atmosphere. Children aged roughly 4 to 8 and family audiences alike will find delight in interpreting the visual storytelling, making each reading a shared and interactive experience. Because the book’s sequence unfolds visually, readers can revisit it season after season, discovering new elements in the illustrations with each return.

For homes and libraries seeking a Christmas title that celebrates imagination, visual literacy, and timeless festive magic, On Christmas Eve remains a treasured choice. Its enduring appeal lies in the simplicity of its concept and the expressive power of its illustrations, making it a holiday classic that transcends language.
