Other Men’s Flowers by A. P. Wavell

Other Men’s Flowers is one of the most beloved and enduring poetry anthologies of the twentieth century, compiled by Field Marshal Earl Wavell, one of Britain’s most distinguished military leaders. Rather than presenting his own poetry, Wavell gathered together a carefully chosen selection of verse that had inspired, comforted, and guided him throughout his life and military career. The result is a deeply personal anthology that offers readers a fascinating insight into the literary tastes and philosophical reflections of one of the leading figures of his generation.

This 1978 reprint of the Memorial Edition was published by Jonathan Cape and includes an introduction by Wavell’s son. Other Men’s Flowers contains a rich variety of poetry drawn from English literature’s greatest writers, ranging from Shakespeare and Milton to Kipling and many lesser-known poets whose work resonated with Wavell’s experiences and values. The collection is celebrated not only for its literary merit but also for the thoughtful annotations and observations that accompany many selections.

For collectors of military history, poetry, and literary anthologies, Other Men’s Flowers remains a highly desirable volume. Other Men’s Flowers serves as both an introduction to classic English verse and a unique record of the intellectual and emotional influences that shaped one of Britain’s most respected military commanders.

A rewarding addition to any poetry collection, military library, or bookshelf devoted to classic literature and inspirational reading.
