An attractive pair of Fang-style African tribal figures, each individually hand-carved from a single piece of hardwood and inspired by the celebrated ancestor sculptures of the Fang people of Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and Cameroon. Executed in the distinctive elongated style for which Fang sculpture is renowned, these complementary male and female figures make an impressive display as a matching pair.
The female figure features the characteristic Fang coiffure with a broad helmet-style hairstyle, stylised facial features, and hands resting across the abdomen. The male figure is distinguished by prominent ears, an elaborate headband, an original feather plume inserted into the rear of the head, and a ceremonial horn held across the chest. Both figures exhibit expressive oversized heads, simplified anatomical forms, and rich hand-carved detail that faithfully reflects traditional Central African artistic influences.
Each sculpture has been carved from a single piece of hardwood and is balanced by an integral stabilising peg extending beneath the figure, a feature typical of this style of carving. The warm reddish-brown patina and contrasting darker surface decoration provide excellent visual appeal while enhancing their authentic tribal character.
The male stands approximately 36.5 cm high, while the female is slightly shorter. Both measure approximately 10 cm wide and 11 cm deep, making them ideal for display on a bookshelf, cabinet, or as part of a curated ethnographic collection.
Whether displayed in a contemporary interior, lodge, gallery, or alongside an African art collection, this matching pair of African Tribal Figures offers a striking decorative presence inspired by one of Central Africa’s most recognised sculptural traditions.
Condition – Very good vintage condition with an attractive aged patina
Both figures are structurally sound with expected age-related surface wear, rubbing, and minor handling marks. The original feather insert remains present on the male figure. Both retain their carved stabilising pegs.
